- VIRTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
-
-
- The category VIRTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT is
- another
- one of what we believe to be exciting categories listed in
- this guide.
-
- The development of realistic looking 3-dimensional human
- characters is a difficult task. Being human ourselves, we are
- not easily fooled by versions of 3D animated people that do
- not look perfect in every way. In order to adequately model
- the human form on a computer, a large amount of data
- must be used along with very carefully acquired and
- positioned texture maps placed on that data. Lighting and
- the way it falls on a human face and figure also plays a
- major role to suspend disbelief of a models authenticity.
-
- Beyond that, motion, facial gestures and synchronization
- with real world events can be a dead giveaway that a
- computer animated character is being used. These are all
- extremely difficult problems to solve. Many of the
- organizations and their products that we have included in
- this category have attempted to deal with aspects of this
- complex issue. Some virtual character building professionals
- believe that synthetic actors should be used and that we
- should avoid using exact duplicates of real people for
- philosophical reasons. Others, like us, would like to simulate
- a version of people that is indistinguishable from an original
- as cast in a role in a scripted scenario. Until we are able to
- accomplish a level of fidelity in VR where we can substitute
- our virtual self for our real self in a VR based encounter or
- telepresence experience, we really are not there yet.
-
- This category includes a wide variety of tools and systems
- that we feel can be used in the task of virtual character
- development. Without a doubt, there are products that have
- been omitted and we hope that future revisions of this guide
- will be able to include them.
-
- If you are aware of anything that should be included, please
- contact us so they can be added next time.
